Originally a mission station of Lupi, Ragay was first settled along the Paculago River. Frequent Moro raids led residents to move upstream to a safer area called Hagay, which later became Ragay.
Ragay is classified as a 1st income class municipality. Its economy is primarily based on agriculture and fishing, benefiting from its coastal location along Ragay Gulf.
